The project was inspired by a documentary called "Life Matters 2019(人间世)", which filmed lives of children with various cancers. In one specific episode, the little patient describes the dream he had one night:

One time in my dream, I took off the hospital gown. My friends and I were confronting our common enemy, cancer. Mom, Dad, and doctors were behind us. Life is like fireworks - it is short for everyone but they will always have their most gorgeous moments.

”

Problem Statement

Besides the side effects of treatments, the children in long-term hospitalization are suffering from unimaginable torture (fear, loneliness, out of control and despair), but they are strong in fighting. We want to find a design solution to relieve their pain.

Solution Overview

We designed the virtual character and user interfaces for the XR app with design system. For the 2023 PICO DevJam hackathon, we also made a prototype implemented in VR headset using unity.

Secondary Research

To understand the timeline and what treatment would pediatric patients experiencing long-term hospitalization go through, we first conducted secondary research, such as literature review.

In this project, I decided to focus on leukemia because it is the most common pediatric cancer, comprising 25% of all cancer types.

85%

The 5-year relative high survival rate of leukemia is 85%, which means they have a high chance of returning to normal life after hospitalization.

Primary Research: Interviews

To further understand how do pediatric patients think and feel during long term hospitalization, we need to gain more insights from primary research. We interviewed 8 medical staff members who specialized in pediatric patients in Chinese public hospital and 2 leukemia pediatric patients' parents.
